Work on Bristol’s arena is ready to begin. While other major UK cities have long hosted some of the world’s greatest shows, Bristolians have been forced to travel to the likes of Cardiff, Birmingham, and London to catch their favourites live. But the end of those days is almost in sight.
While initial plans for a Bristol arena were announced in 2003, planning permission wasn’t granted for the former Filton Airfield site until 2020. The YTL Corporation originally planned to start construction in 2022, with a completion date set for early 2026. This was later delayed to 2028, while there is now no official opening date.
What’s the latest news?

The transformation of the historic Brabazon Hangars into the 20,000-capacity YTL Arena in Bristol has completed its major demolition and is ready for construction to begin. The central hangar has been stripped back to its original 1940s steel frame, while the Esavian sliding hangar doors have been removed.
Preparations are also underway to remove seven major structural trusses and the existing roof to enable the construction of the new seating bowl. Surrounding outer buildings have already been demolished, clearing the way for the next phase of development, including a new bridge connecting the arena with the rest of Brabazon.
Andrew Billingham, CEO of YTL Arena, said: “We are making great progress. To see the hangar stripped back to its original structure is both a striking reminder of its long history and a powerful signal of its future as a world-class arena. Every stage of dismantling brings us closer to welcoming A-list artists and their fans through the doors.”
What will the YTL Arena look like?

The 20,000 capacity arena will host 140 events annually, with “interlinking facilities for conferences and exhibitions.” It will host not only concerts, but sports and other live events, too, as well as include areas for exhibitions and conferences, hospitality venues, and leisure sites—potentially, like an outdoor cinema, ice rink and sports courts.
