Unless you live under a rock, you’ll know it’s Bristol Pride this weekend (Saturday, July 12)—and this year, the iconic LGBTQ+ event is celebrating its 15th anniversary. But, while it’s an incredible moment of celebration and protest, being an active member of Bristol’s queer community isn’t a one-day affair.
That’s where the Bristol Queer Directory comes in. It’s basically a huge, evolving online spreadsheet full of social groups, local businesses, calendar events and support networks, to help people navigate Bristol’s incredible LGBTQ+ scene. You’ll never run out of things to do or people to meet in Bristol with this bookmarked.
Launched last year by LGBTQ+ community organisers, Queer Radiance, the Bristol Queer Directory is a completely voluntary project, but has now grown into a resource filled with (as of writing) 96 social groups, 91 business, 71 events and 39 support organisations. It’s growing all the time, too, with your chance to offer suggestions to be added.
What can I find in the Bristol Queer Directory?
Just from a quick dive in, I can see choir groups, cinema clubs, and yoga classes. Whether you’re a writer or surfer, parent or punk, there’s something here for every member of queer community—-from ‘Butch Ping Pong’ to fans of quality beer. But it’s not just about meet-ups.
On top, you will find a calendar of exciting events that are less well-covered by most Bristol media. It’s got plenty of drag shows, club nights, kink raves, nature walks, open mics and more to fill your diary up. Plus, it’s got a fantastic list of LGBT-friendly/owned pubs, cafes, gyms (and many other businesses) to spend your money at.
Of course, it’s not all fun and games being a part of LGBTQ+ community, which is why the Bristol Queer Directory doubles as an incredible support resource. Whether you (or someone you know) are struggling with discrimination, mental health, housing, drugs or alcohol, HIV, grief, or anything else, there’s a breathtaking amount of help to be found in Bristol.
