We’ve waxed lyrical about Clifton so many times before; the small suburb has a reputation for being affluent, but is full of exciting things that everyone can enjoy. Full of buzzing bars, top-notch restaurants, iconic landmarks and slick secondhand stores. According to a new survey, Clifton is in fact the most stylish place to live in Bristol.
In a search for the UK’s most stylish places by online store Furniturebox, Clifton came in 29th on the national list. But was the number one spot in Bristol. Often seen as the jewel in the crown of the city, the Georgian area was noted for its “limestone townhouse architecture [that] rivals that of Bath.” Other highlights included “wonderful views across the docks and the city centre to the fields and hills beyond”, as well as being “home to the world famous Clifton Suspension Bridge.”
Locations were ranked according to the beauty of the buildings, vibrant cultural life, green spaces and a good mix of contemporary and classical architecture. Clifton has all four categories in spades. In second place in Bristol was Redland, Bishopston was third, Leigh Woods was fourth, and Henleaze was fifth. Furniturebox polled 5,000 people with panels in each county and big city of the UK, including Bristol.
“Any of the locations in Bristol voted by residents would have been worthy winners and show why it is such a stylish city, loved by artists, film-makers and tourists from all over the world,” said a Furniturebox spokesperson.
“What is interesting is how many of the most stylish locations were not the most affluent places in their locality. Good style can be achieved whatever your budget and what marks out Bristol’s most stylish places is how they all have a timeless quality achieved over generations by the stylish people living there.”
While Clifton is undoubtedly a stylish place to live, we would argue that Bristol is far greater than the sum of its parts. The city would not be the same without Clifton, much, in the same way, it would not be without Easton or Southville, Fishponds or Filton. The suburb is just one small part of a rich tapestry that makes up Bristol.
