It’s not even a competition anymore. When talking about the best bakery in Bristol, again and again, Farro Bakery‘s name is always first. That’s not to say the rest are bad, quite the opposite, but this small St Paul’s bakery can’t stop being picked among the UK’s best bakeries – fromThe Times to the Financial Times.
Farro has once again been named among the top artisan bakeries in Britain as part of the 2025 Bakers’ Dozen by the leading bakery trade magazine, British Baker. It’s voted for by over 100 handpicked specialists from artisan bakers, suppliers, consultants and lecturers too, so this is one list you guarantee is based on knowledge – with voters broken down by region to ensure bakeries across Britain have equal opportunity to shine.
An artisan bakery is described as “where baked goods – such as sourdough, bread, buns, pastries, cakes and more – are made by skilled bakers by hand, often utilising longer and more traditional processes. Quality of ingredients and the end products are high on the agenda, and as a result, artisan bakeries typically only have a handful of sites.”
Coming 8th, Farro is the highest-placed artisanal bakery representing the South West – with Gorse in Cornwall finishing 10th on the list. However, Cumbria and Manchester’s Lovingly Artisan Bakery was named the top artisanal bakery in Britain for the third year in a row. Other notable bakeries to feature include Levain & Cherry in Birmingham (7th), Pettigrew Bakeries in Cardiff (9th) and Arôme in London (5th).
What should I order at Farro Bakery?
You’ll hardly put a foot wrong at Farro, which offers a range of classic bakes and modern takes. Milling its own flour, with chemical-free grains sourced mostly from South West farmers, Farro is deeply proud of its fresh, flavoursome and nutritious sourdough loaves. But you shouldn’t leave without trying its uniquely flakey and buttery Viennoiserie or grabbing a house espresso from Bristols’ very own Triple Co Roast.
If you order only one thing, we recommend trying Farro’s legendary canelés. But you’ll hardly put a foot wrong at this Bristol bakery, whose counter changes with the seasons. In the past, Farro has offered everything from orange pastel de natas to yellow peach and vanilla cream-filled crouxs, and rhubarb and white chocolate custard galettes.
You’ll find Farro Bakery at 1 Brunswick Square, St Paul’s, Bristol BS2 8PE.
