Paying tribute to the late, great popstar, The Royal Mint has just released a new George Michael coin, with a design partly inspired by the iconic music video for Faith.
The coin, which can be found on The Royal Mint website, displays the engraving of the refrain from Faith, as well as a shot of him wearing those iconic sunglasses in front of his guitar fretboard. It follows coins that recognise fellow artists including Queen, David Bowie, and Elton John.
George Micahel was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame last year, seven years after he passed way on Christmas Day 2016. He and Andrew Ridgely made up the beloved duo that was Wham! and between them and his own solo career, George is responsible for a treasure trove of stone-cold classics songs.
The coin is now part of the Music Legends collection, and the George Michael side was designed by sculptor and artist Sandra Deiana, with the official King Charles III coinage on the reverse.
Speaking about the coin, she said: “I wanted a detailed portrait of George Michael that captured his piercing gaze and charismatic expression, and I was particularly thinking of his iconic sunglasses. I also wanted to include symbolic elements related to his music and his career, such as his guitar.
“I am extremely happy with the finished design. I believe the final design captures the essence of George Michael and his importance in music history.
“Every detail, from the features of his face to the inclusion of symbolic elements, was carefully thought out and crafted with dedication. I sincerely hope that the public will appreciate this coin from a numismatic perspective, but also as a loving tribute to an extraordinary artist.”
It also comes after Last Christmas hit number one in the charts at—you guessed it—Christmas time in 2023, just the 39 years after it was first released!
