Billie Eilish will become the youngest solo headliner in the festival’s history.
Back in March 2020, Glastonbury Festival were preparing to host their heavily-anticipated 50th anniversary event over at Worthy Farm. But, as we know, the world had other ideas.
Since the pandemic, Glastonbury have been forced to cancel their historic event not once, but twice – with the June 2021 event coming too soon, despite festivals in the UK being held later in the summer following the July 19 “Freedom Day”.
Now, we won’t speak to soon, but it feels like we can finally get excited about the prospect of the UK’s biggest and most-acclaimed festival happening once again. And this morning, organisers have confirmed the first little taster; announcing Billie Eilish as Glastonbury 2022’s first headliner.
Billie Eilish, currently 19, is set to become the festival’s youngest ever solo-headliner. When she takes to the stage on Friday, June 24 2022, she will be 20 years and six months. As of now, the youngest performer in a group to be part of a headline set was Mark Hamilton (20 years and three months) from the band Ash, who headlined the event in 1997.
Having previously performed at The Other Stage in 2019, Billie Eilish teased fans last night (October 4) on her Instagram, uploading an image of herself wearing a Glastonbury Festival hoodie, with the caption “2022”. This morning, the news was confirmed by the festival.
Glastonbury’s co-organiser Emily Eavis said she “couldn’t be happier”, and added: “This feels like the perfect way for us to return and I cannot wait!”
No further artists have been announced, although founder Michael Eavis previously stated his confidence that some acts from the planned 2020 event would play. Headliners for the 50th anniversary event were due to be Taylor Swift, Paul McCartney and Kendrick Lamar.
Glastonbury Festival takes place between June 22-26, 2022. Full ticketing information will be released here in due course. Billie Eilish released her second album “Happier Than Ever” this year, and will headline the Pyramid Stage on Friday June 24.
