Bristol is brimming with incredible independent bookshops, each carving out their niche, but there’s still room for one more. You won’t find anything like The Haunted Bookshop elsewhere in the city. Now open in Stokes Croft, it’s selling every kind of creepy book from blood-soaked horror classics to eclectic occultist rare reads.
“Step into a world of spine-chilling tales, mystical splendours, and ancient folklore as you explore our carefully curated collection of horror, fantasy, and witchcraft books,” the description reads. “Whether you’re seeking spine-tingling thrills, fantastical adventures, or a deeper understanding of the occult, our shelves are brimming with stories sure to enchant you.”
Darkly decorated (filled with witchy items like old portraits, golden stars, candlesticks etc.) The Haunted Bookshop is the brainchild of Monika Killer (we don’t know if that’s her real last name). She’s long dreamt of opening a shop specialising in horror, fantasy, folklore, and other books in Bristol – and has now brought that dream nightmare to life.
Plus, there’s an incredible children’s selection too. But it’s not just trading in ghost stories and folk tales. The Haunted Bookshop stocks numerous “witchy items” like candles, sage, incense and many more gifts. You can even get your hands on pumpkin-spiced lattes all year around (alongside a selection of coffees, teas, and soft drinks to enjoy while you browse).
Downstairs, there is a comfy seating area ready to start hosting your spooky events – ideal for your Stephen King-themed book club, Tarot card readings, or coven meeting every full moon. And having only opened (on September 30), the former hairdressers will surely be open to your input and ideas – perfect now that Halloween is only around the corner!
Open Tuesday to Saturday, from 12-6pm, you’ll find The Haunted Bookshop at 43 Stokes Croft, Bristol BS1 3PY. To follow regular updates with what’s happening head to the Instagram page here.
