There are countless stories behind the colourful houses of Bristol, but one of the famous ones comes from our former mayor, George Ferguson—who claims to be the first in Cliftonwood to paint his house.
Back in the ‘70s, developers were threatening to knock through Cliftonwood and build tower blocks. So, in defiance, he painted his house terracotta red and, following suit, soon did the whole street.
This kick-started the area’s now iconic look, and you can be a part of it. A four-bedroom house on Ambrose Road has gone on the market. And it sounds like a dream home for many.
What is this colouful house like?

The iconic four-floor townhouse with views of the floating harbour is on sale for £850,000. That’s way too much out of my price range, but for someone else, it could be the perfect family home.
As you enter, you will find a reception room with a feature fireplace, original coving and dado rails (that feature throughout the property). This then leads to a formal sitting room at the rear, with a gas fire and stripped wood floors.

Downstairs, you can find an open kitchen/dining room, which then opens out onto a rear south-facing garden. Meanwhile, four very large double bedrooms occupy the first and second floors, with two modern family bathrooms, one on each floor.
It’s located at the end of the Cliftonwood terrace and only a short walk from Clifton Village and all its wonderful independent shops, cafes and restaurants. The property also benefits from an additional parcel of land at the rear of the property that forms part of a community nature space shared with the neighbours.
