Like probably many of you reading this, I’ve got a cupboard stuffed with only once-used items collecting dust. There’s that iron I bought for a friend’s wedding, those garden sheers I used to trim back a few tree branches, and a drill that’s helped me afix exactly one bookshelf. But what if there was a better way?
Well, there is, and you’ve probably already heard of it. Everyone in this city is already crazy about Share Bristol’s Library of Things concept. With locations already in Kingswood and Bedminster, a third location has now opened in north Bristol at the University of the West of England (UWE). Located next to the main bus stops at UWE Bristol, it’s open to students, staff, and the local community.
“Bringing a Library of Things to Frenchay campus is another way we’re giving the UWE community, as well as wider public, a practical alternative to buying new,” said Jo Dainton, Head of Circular Economy, UWE Bristol. “This sits alongside our regular Repair Cafes and Sustainability Hubs and is an exciting collaboration with a local charity”.
The small charity has run a Library of Things on Kingswood High Street since 2021 but opened a new location on East Street in June 2024. This new site is accessible by public transport and has short-term parking for those picking up or returning bulky items, like carpet cleaners, mitre saws, lawnmowers, or gazebos.
How does a Library of Things work?
It works a lot like a normal library. You need an annual membership (which costs £50 per year), and then everything is free to borrow. Many of the most popular summer items were things like tents and other camping gear, strimmers, lawnmowers, pressure washers, and gazebos, alongside year-round favourites like carpet cleaners and drills.
There are also concession memberships for people receiving benefits at £20 for a year, as well as £80 supporter memberships available. Plus, a membership is valid at Share Bristol’s other locations, with over 1500 things available.
Once a member, you can reserve anything from Share Bristol for up to two weeks – simply head over to the website to browse the collection and book what you need. When it’s time to collect, drop by during your chosen collection slot, and everything will be ready.
Share Bristol Frenchay is open on Mondays from 18:00 – 20:00 and Wednesdays from 15:00 – 17:00.
