Mr Harrigan’s Phone, October 5
Based on the short story by Stephen King, this film sees a young boy named Craig befriend an older, reclusive billionaire, Mr Harrigan (Donald Sutherland), and the two begin to form an unlikely bond over their love of books and reading. But when Mr. Harrigan sadly passes away, Craig discovers that not everything is dead and gone and strangely finds himself able to communicate with his friend from the grave via the iPhone that was buried with him – creepy or what? This supernatural coming-of-age story shows that certain connections are never lost. Watch it from October 5th.
Luckiest Girl Alive, October 7
Luckiest Girl Alive centres on Ani FaNelli (Mila Kunis), a sharp-tongued New Yorker who appears to have it all: a sought-after position at a glossy magazine, a killer wardrobe, and a dream Nantucket wedding on the horizon. But when the director of a crime documentary invites her to tell her side of the shocking incident that took place when she was a teenager at the prestigious Brentley School, Ani is forced to confront a dark truth that threatens to unravel her meticulously crafted life. Stream it from October 7th.
The Mole, October 7
Fancy a bit of reality TV and competitiveness to break up the spooky Netflix releases this month? The Mole is a high-stakes competition series and in this reimagined version, twelve players work together in challenges to add money to a pot that only one of them will win at the end. Among the players is one person who has secretly been designated “the Mole” and tasked with sabotaging the group’s money-making efforts. In the end, one player will outlast their competition and expose the Mole to win the prize pot. Watch it on October 7th.
The Watcher, October 13
It’s not the month of Halloween without a spine-chilling release coming to Netflix on the thirteenth day of the month. And to make it even more chilling, this TV series starring Bobby Canavale and Naomi Watts is inspired on the true story of the infamous “Watcher” house in New Jersey. After the Brannock family moves into what was supposed to be their suburban dream home, it quickly becomes a living hell. Ominous letters from someone calling themselves “The Watcher” are just the beginning as the neighbourhood’s sinister secrets come spilling out. Watch it from October 13th.
The Curse of Bridge Hollow, October 14
Adding to the spook factor this October is a Halloween-themed film which is perhaps a little more light-hearted compared to some of this month’s Netflix releases. A father (Marlon Wayans) and his teenage daughter (Priah Ferguson of Stranger Things) are forced to team up and save their town after an ancient and mischievous spirit causes Halloween decorations to come to life and wreak havoc. Watch it from October 14th.
Notre-Dame, October 19
Remember when Notre-Dame in Paris burned down in 2019? Well, they’re still working on restoring it. This Netflix series takes place during the night that Notre-Dame burned. It’s about the destiny of men and women who have their own fire to put out. As the Paris firefighters try to stop the flames from spreading in the Cathedral, the show also follows characters struggling too – they will have to fight each other, love each other, come across each other, hate each other, smile at or help each other – so that, in the end, they may have a chance to start all over again. Watch it on October 19th.
The School for Good and Evil, October 19
One night under a blood red moon, a powerful force sweeps two misfits and best friends, Sophie and Agatha, away to the School for Good and Evil. Yet something is amiss from the start: Sophie is dropped into the School for Evil, run by the glamourous and acid-tongued Lady Lesso (Charlize Theron), and Agatha in the School for Good, overseen by the sunny and kind Professor Dovey (Kerry Washington). As if navigating classes with the offspring of the Wicked Witch, Captain Hook, and the dashing son of King Arthur wasn’t hard enough, only true love’s kiss can change the rules and send the girls to their rightful schools and destiny. But when a dark and dangerous figure with mysterious ties to Sophie reemerges and threatens to destroy the school and the world beyond entirely — the only way to a happy ending is to survive their real life fairy tale first. Watch it from October 19th.
From Scratch, October 21
Alongside horror and fantasy coming to Netflix this October is your monthly romantic series. Inspired by the memoir, From Scratch is a cross-cultural love story that follows Amahle “Amy” Wheeler (Zoe Saldaña) an American student studying abroad in Italy, as she meets and falls in love with Lino, a Sicilian chef. Their whirlwind romance faces many unforeseen challenges, including their very different cultural backgrounds. But when Lino is faced with unimaginable health challenges and the couple’s future is threatened, the two families come together to create an extended family unlike any they could have imagined, proving that love crosses all borders. Stream it from October 21st.
Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, October 25
Known for his creepy tales such as The Devil’s Backbone, Pan’s Labyrinth and psychological thriller Nightmare Alley, the Mexican filmmaker returns in the lead up to Halloween. Guillermo del Toro has curated a collection of unprecedented and genre-defining stories meant to challenge our traditional notions of horror. From macabre to magical, gothic to grotesque or classically creepy, these eight equally sophisticated and sinister tales (including two original stories by del Toro) are brought to life by a team of writers and directors personally chosen by del Toro. Watch it from October 25th.
The Good Nurse, October 26
Adding to the gripping thrillers arriving to Netflix this October is The Good Nurse starring Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain. Amy, a nurse and single mother struggling with a life-threatening heart condition, is stretched to her physical and emotional limits by the hard and demanding night shifts at the ICU. But help arrives when Charlie, a fellow nurse, starts at her unit. While sharing long nights at the hospital, the two develop a strong and devoted friendship, and for the first time in years, Amy truly has faith in her and her young daughters’ future. But after a series of mysterious patient deaths sets off an investigation that points to Charlie as the prime suspect, Amy is forced to risk her life and the safety of her children to uncover the truth.
