What does £125,000 get you these days? Well, not a lot it seems. It won’t get you a great place to live in Bristol that’s for sure. When the average flat here, according to Right Move, will set you back more than £250,000. It won’t be much longer until you can’t even afford a Freddo with that amount.
So this remote Scottish island has to be a bargain, right? Located off the northwest coast of the Island of Lismore, in one of the least explored areas of Scotland, Eilean Loch Oscair is the ultimate getaway-from-it-all destination. It even boasts the ability to support animals and grow food – thanks to a spring on the island – so you’ll never have to leave!
Just under 10 acres, Eilean Loch Oscair is described as “perfect for camping and rewilding” with beautiful views of Ben Nevis. But maybe forget any eccentric dreams of building a mansion on the island. Councillors have already dismissed one attempt to build “a low impact off-grid, and sustainable, building on the highest part of the island.”
Eilean Loch Oscair lies within the Lynn of Lorn National Scenic Area, which ultimately restricts development to agriculture. As a registered croft, you can take up farming! In fact, it actually means you can’t just buy the island and forget about it. You have to maintain the land for a useful purpose, be it farming, rewilding or rearing livestock.
How do I get to this remote island?
First off, you’re going to need a boat. Your closest neighbour, roughly five miles away, is Lismore. The first major Celtic Christian area established in Scotland, the Island population sits at around 200 people with access from a private jetty at Port Ramsay. Here, you’ll also find a village store, post office, heritage centre and a village hall.
You’ll be able to get a ferry to Lismore from the mainland town of Oban. Taking approximately 45 minutes, from here you’ll have access to supermarkets and a railway service to Glasgow. After a three-hour train, flights between Bristol and Glasgow are only an hour. So the move to Eilean Loch Oscair will take no time at all but with enough time to read the Wikipedia article on “Agriculture”.
