If you’re into skateboarding, odds are you’ve popped into a car park or two over your lifetime. Smooth concrete surfaces, well-sheltered from the weather, and grindable curbs, make them perfect for pulling off an ollie or a heelflip. Well, they would be if it weren’t for all the cars.
Keen to make Cabot Circus car park less hazardous for skateboarders this October half term, Hammerson Plc and CANVAS have teamed up to create this free-to-use skate park. Kitting out Level 7 of the shopping centre’s car park with the likes of long-painted curbs, manual pads, ledges, rails, and kicker ramps.
This is the second year the partnership has pulled off this initiative, which proved a huge success in 2022. CANVAS is a design and construction company, specialising in concrete skateparks, and they’ve created another dream spot with this pop-up. Just head down any day until October 29 (11am-8pm), when you’re free to get your skate on.
There will also be a number of free beginner skate lessons for anyone who’s never picked up a board before (October 26 & 27), while a Route One takeover on October 29 will also offer free skate lessons with instructors. On Saturday, October 28, a series of skate competitions between 12pm-5pm for those who want to show off. Plus, plenty more activities.
“We’re kicking out the cars. So, it’s safe to skate,” reads the Cabot Circus website. “It’s half-term. It’s undercover, weatherproof, fun. All ages. Novice or pro. Boys and Girls. Boarders and inline skates. Don’t park, skate.”
So as you can see, it’s not just for boarders either, but inline skaters are all invited. Meanwhile, Upfest will also be showcasing a number of art pieces at the skate park – so this is one for street art lovers too.
