It’s almost outdoor swimming season. And for the braver among us, it’s already begun! But, whether it’s Bristol Harbour or Henleaze Lake, finding a clean and clear spot is top of our priorities before diving in. That’s why we’re so excited about the huge, crystal-clear, lake that’s only half an hour’s drive from Bristol.
The former Cromhall Quarry, outside of Wotton-under-Edge, has been transformed into The Lake. And, four hectares wide, 18 meters deep, and “limestone-filtered”, it’s ideal for every open-water activity imaginable – from swimming to diving and paddleboarding. That’s our summer plans sorted!
What can I do at The Lake?

Open all year round, The Lake’s two-hour, open-water swimming sessions are probably its biggest draw. Surrounded by South West scenery, you won’t find a more stunning and safer swim spot for miles – especially one that’s only £6 a pop, with no memberships. You can even sign up for a cold water swimming workshop to help you take the plunge with this ‘invigorating’ hobby.
A more unique way to spend your Saturdays and Sundays, however, is to explore the underwater landscapes of The Lake. Whether a seasoned diver or a complete beginner, The Lake is a perfect and safe environment to hone your scuba diving skills with eight-hour days for only £16. The Lake is also open for several paddleboarding activities, from 1-2-1 coaching to the freedom of ‘Bring Your Own Board’ sessions.

To make sure you’ve got all the gear, as well as all the ideas, an on-site shop will make sure you’re stocked up on everything from wetsuits to goggles and more. You can also refresh and refuel at the lakeside food truck! – serving both hot and cold drinks, a selection of cakes and savoury items like bacon rolls, homemade soups and classic toasties.
How do I get to The Lake?
The most convenient way to The Lake from Bristol is to drive via the M5, which is only 30 minutes by car. Alternatively, hop on the Y8 bus from Yate to Bibstone Turn, but this could take over two hours. It’s only a 1.5-hour bike ride if you don’t by cycling.
📍 You’ll find The Lake at: Cromhall Quarry, Wotton Rd, Wotton-under-Edge GL12 8AA
