It’s been a long and tough year (yes, already). That’s why you deserve to be treated like royalty this January. And we don’t just mean breakfast in bed and showered with gifts. We mean literal royalty. Because you can stay in an actual Tudor castle this holiday season, only half an hour outside of Bristol.
The historic Thornbury Castle once housed Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn for a short time and is the only Tudor castle that now also works as a luxury hotel. So follow in the footsteps of a former king and queen, and book a room yourself! After a massive refurbishment in 2021, the 26-room hotel is the height of grandeur… Go on, you know you deserve it!
On the “cheaper” side of things stay in a beautifully decorated Deluxe room, with a traditional style, lavish bathrooms and iconic castle features. A night’s stay can cost as low as £199, but prices rise to £583. But there is a range of other, more luxurious and costly, rooms to choose from. Including the Henry VIII Suite, the very room that the Tudor King of England and his queen shared in 1535.
But for the greatest luxury, book out the Catherine of Aragon Tower Suite – with prices ranging from £609 to £1,033 for a night. Sat at the very top of the South Wing tower, you’ll have to climb the atmospheric spiral staircase and push through the grand wooden door to enter. Inside you’ll find 24-carat gilding, Tudor furnishings, silk wall hangings and the largest four-poster bed of any UK hotel. It’s a room fit for a king and queen.
But what else is there at Thornbury Castle, we hear you ask? Well, it’s much more than just a comfy night’s sleep away from the kids. There are 15 acres of land surrounding the castle to discover – with stunning views and endless activities for all who stay. Stroll through The Rose Garden and get lost in the Labyrinth; take up a new skill like longbow archery, axe throwing or falconry; or unwind with a relaxing spa treatment.
You can also stop by for a royal feast in one of Thornbury Castle’s 3AA rosette dining rooms. With an a-la-carte menu offered all week and a six-course tasting menu over weekends, this is a dining experience you’ll never forget. To truly make this a Christmas to remember, make sure to book the most extravagant of afternoon treats!
You’ll find Thornbury Castle at Castle St, Thornbury, Bristol BS35 1HH. To learn more about the Tudor castle and all that it offers head here.
