Bristol is so much more than Banksy. Just take a walk up and down Nelson Street or around Easton to see what I mean. Last year (yes, we mean 2024) saw the return of Upfest to BS3 in a more stripped-back fashion, but with over 200 artworks painted across South Bristol – but one has stood out in particular.
Street Art Cities is celebrating “the most popular street art across the world, as voted by the largest street art community in the world.” Work from all over the world – including London, New York and Casablanca – have been nominated in three categories. And it includes this portrait piece of a man playing a violin.
Painted by Liam Bononi for Upfest 2024, it’s actually a mural of violinist Rupert Engledow (of Hyde Family Jam) performing in the streets of York. “That performance was in my mind for a while and I decided to bring it to life with this mural,” said Liam Bononi on Instagram. “It’s was a long winter and it always amazes me how art can help us deal and develop our emotions for a period of time.”
You can spot the Brazil-born/Liverpool-based artist’s raw piece just behind CJ Hole, near Tobacco Factory, in Southville. Turn off North Street onto Lime Road and it’s tagged on the side of someone’s house (83 Lime Road). It’s featured in the ‘Expert Spotlight’, which was decided by a panel of street art experts – including Glasgow’s graffiti veteran, GazMac, and founder of independent street art blog BLocal, Giulia Riva.
Now you can vote for this Bristol street art mural and cement its legendary status. You have until January 31 to cast your vote, submitting in each of the three categories (which also includes ‘Best Mural of the World’ and ‘Artist Choice’). To see all nominees and vote head here.
