If you’ve been lucky enough to head over to littlefrench, you’ll have found a little slice of France in Westbury Park – with a boho Bristol twist. The French bistro is easily one of the best restaurants in Bristol. And now the team has set its sights on pooling together the best food from across Europe, with its new spot in Clifton Village, 1 York Place.
Opening on Saturday (December 16), 1 York Place is a cosy and welcoming 46-cover neighbourhood restaurant spotlighting the best that European cuisine has to offer. The bistro will continue the informal yet impeccable approach to food, wine and ambience that the dynamic husband and wife team (Freddy and Nessa Bird) have become known for – who also run the café/bakery, Littleshop & Pantry.
Offering a classic a la carte menu with an affordable wine list, the menu will visit all corners of the European continent. It draws inspiration from Freddy’s career – from his training at Ballymaloe Cookery School to working at the prestigious two Michelin-starred The Square with Phil Howard, and at Moro with Sam and Sam Clark.
Bar snacks include Smoked pork belly; and Poached oyster, English vermouth, trout roe and dill. Starters include Surf clams, confit tomato, chilli; and Potato soup, black truffle and chanterelles. While mains include Ricotta gnudi; Whole squid stuffed with pork rib and trotter rice; and Hake, caramelised fennel, saffron, anis, and clams.
Meanwhile, there are several dishes designed for sharing: Hot roast shellfish, tarragon garlic and parsley butter; Whole wood grilled monkfish tail, rosemary manteca; and Roast suckling pig shoulder and fabada. At lunchtime, the menu will reflect a more relaxed spot – with some small plates to enjoy with a glass of wine, including: Truffle tagliatelle; Migas – butifarra; Cotechino, Umbrian lentils, salsa verde; Schnitzel Holstein, rocket, artichoke, parmesan and many more.
Open seven days a week, from 12pm until midnight (except on Sundays when it closes at 4pm), the restaurant is also dedicated to supporting the local community. It will work together with other family-led, independent businesses in the area, including their food and drink producers and suppliers both on the continent and closer to home in Bristol.
You’ll find it at 1 York Place, Clifton, Bristol, BS8 1 AH.
