Whiteladies Road is legendary as a long strip of independent shops, cafes, bars, pubs, restaurants and so much more. What it doesn’t have, however, is much outdoor space. Somewhere to relax and unwind. Escape the hustle and bustle of the busy street. Luckily ABOE (which stands for ‘a bit of everything’) has heard our prayers as it opens up its ‘secret garden’ to the public.
The restaurant and cocktail bar opened on Whiteladies Road back in February, taking over the spot formally filled by Flipside. Run by the Michelin-trained chef, Sebastian Murray, it offers modern British fusion and a bit of, well… everything. Expect fine dining sharing plates that see Seb fuse classical French cooking with south-east Asian influences.
There’s a huge focus on sourcing products from local, ethical and sustainable producers. And some ingredients are even grown on Seb’s family farm! On Sundays in particular, expect some of the most jaw-dropping roast dinners you’ll find in all of Bristol too. Choose between umami short rib, ponzu-glazed duck breast, or swede & turnip cake. All come with roast potatoes, cauliflower & broccoli cheese, braised red cabbage, sprouting broccoli, creamy leeks, carrots, parsnips, Yorkshire pudding and gravy.
But we’re not here to talk about that! Now that the sun is shining on a regular basis again (hallelujah!), most of our priorities are on getting outside. Enjoy some fresh air and feel the warmth on your skin. For those after al fresco dining and drinking, ABOE will open a secluded ‘secret garden’, full of shrubbery and picnic benches, this weekend.
As of today (May 5), the garden is open for walk-ins from 12 pm to 10 pm and again on Saturday. On Sundays, it will be open from 12 pm to 8 pm. Perfect for some sunny days spent outside with cocktails. To coincide, the restaurant will also launch Sunday Sessions from May 21, every Sunday throughout the summer. Alongside being able to tuck into their amazing roast dinners, ABOE will invite DJs to play chilled-out music outside in the hidden spot.
