21 years ago, a litre of fuel cost 81p, a pint of beer was £3.50 and the average house sold for £106, 748. Hard to imagine, right? Well, Bar 44 in Clifton Village is rewinding the clock this January to 2002 so you don’t have to. Celebrating its 21st birthday, it’s offering selected drinks and tapas at cut prices throughout the month.
Bar 44, which also has locations in Cardiff and Penarth, first opened in Cowbridge in 2002. Situated in an old bank on Regent Street, the Spanish bar and restaurant didn’t arrive in Bristol until 2018. Specialising in tapas and European cocktails (from sangria to G&Ts), as well as classic Spanish drinks like sherry and vermouth, these 2002 prices are only available only select items.
But this is still an incredible offer. There are six tapas-style dishes to choose from, all under a fiver. This includes mushrooms, amontillado sherry, sage and cristal toast (£3.95); Pan Jamon with sourdough and tomato (£4.50); air-dried beef & manchego caesar salad (£4.25); goat’s cheese with honey and orange (£4.95); baby squid and mojo rojo (£4.95); and Iberico pork fillet ponchos (£5).
Note: only three dishes out of the six will be available each day. While, the deal only runs from Wednesdays to Fridays, and until 3 pm on Saturdays, throughout January. But – with a pint costing only £3.50, a glass of wine even cheaper at £3.20, and a margarita only £5.50 – where else are you going to find deals like that in Bristol?
In keeping with the turn-of-the-millennium vibes going, expect plenty of 2002 bangers to be played throughout the bar, like 50 Cent’s ‘In da Club’ and Outkast’s ‘Hey Ya!’ So this January, let’s party like it’s 2002!
