It’s been more than two decades since the release of Bridget Jones’s Diary, an iconic romantic comedy for the ages. But according to reports, Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant are set to reunite for a fourth film, which is due to start filming in London in just a few months.
Last we saw of Bridget, she was walking down the aisle towards her Mr Darcy, a year after baby William was born. But there’s set to finally be a sequel, which will be based on the fourth book in Helen Fielding’s series, Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy. We can expect to see Bridget in her early 50s, exploring the world of online dating as a single mother of two.
I’m personally in utter disbelief that Bridget Jones’s Baby graced our screen eight whole years ago, but all of our favourite characters are believed to be returning in some capacity, including Hugh Grant as Daniel Cleaver. Grant didn’t appear in the third film, as his character was presumed dead. However, the film ends with the revelation that he is alive after all, having survived a plane crash. Bridget Jones’s Baby ends on a seemingly happy note, which begs the question of what on earth happens to Mr Darcy if Bridget is now single?
If we go by Helen Fielding’s books, Mark sadly dies, leaving Bridget a widow. But we can’t say whether the film will follow the same plot, or if it’ll take a different route. Either way, a potentially devastating twist is on the cards.
Fielding had teased the fourth movie in an interview with the Radio Times years ago, saying:
“Yes I’m working on it and I really hope it will happen. Every film that gets made is a miracle. I think it’s really difficult to make films and to make them happen and to make them good and we want it to be really good. But I really hope so. I’d love to see it on the screen.”
Filming is set to start in London in May this year. We don’t have any further information about the film’s release date, but we’ll let you know when we do.
