It’s citywide knowledge that when it starts raining in Bristol, you’d better bring your wellies. From Clifton to Easton, these colourful streets can quickly turn into a scene from The Impossible.
One of the most infamous areas has to be the Junction 3 subway on the M32 – the blight of many cyclists and pedestrians alike. Back in April, we shared an image of the flooded underpass, with stepping stones placed along the path.
It blew up our Instagram and you all saw the funny side:
- “Council spend all that money on a lovely stepping stone arrangement and all people do is complain.”
- “Bristol is a City In the Countryside so just get yourself a pair of wellies & wade through like proper country folk do!”
- “Bit dramatic tbh… there’s literally buses every 10 mins and just don’t use the under pass when it’s flooded.”
After years of complaining (at least over a decade), it seems many of us had given up expecting anything to change. To fix the walkway, which connects to Charlotte Keel Medical Practice and the J3 Library, was “quite complex” according to the council.
Well, at least to the previous council, because Councillor David Wilcox confirmed today (June 13) that the problem had been fixed, and would remain so. At lunchtime, he revealed “The J3 subway drains have been unblocked! Engineers are now re-lining the drains so they don’t block in the future. No more breeze blocks or pallets to cross the ponds!”
It’s far from the only place in Bristol that flooding has affected, however. Last year, the underpass at Lawrence Hill roundabout was renamed “Lawrence Hill Roundabout and Lido” on Google Maps. At least we Bristolians can see the funny side…
