As most Muslims know, the month of Ramadan is much more than simply fasting, it’s also about prayer, reflection and community. If nothing else, we’re one big family here in Bristol. So whether you’ve been partaking all month-long in the Islamic holiday or not, everyone is invited today (April 4) to Bristol Cathedral for Grand Iftar and to break fast together as a community.
What is Grand Iftar?
The Grand Iftar started in Bristol in 2017, shortly after the Manchester Arena bombing. Organised by Muslims4Bristol, it was designed to promote community cohesion, alongside peace and unity. Open to all people of all religions and backgrounds, the event is an opportunity to celebrate Bristol’s diversity.
On top of seeing Bristol sharing a meal together, this free event also includes a variety of guest speakers before and after the meal. Over the years, Grand Iftar has highlighted such themes as sustainability, women in Islam and sanctuary. Last year’s hugely successful Grand Iftar on College Green will be followed up this year inside Bristol Cathedral.
This year’s event is a special collaboration between faith communities in Bristol with the theme of ‘Hope’. It has been organised in partnership with Bristol Cathedral and Bridges for Communities. This event is free, fully accessible and open to everyone, although children must come with a parent or guardian.
Due to the size of Bristol Cathedral, however, there are some restrictions on numbers. You must reserve a place in advance to attend, with a maximum of 5 places per booking (tickets are currently sold out, but you can join the waiting list). You can arrive from 6.45pm and the event starts at 7.15pm. The iftar meal is expected at around 7.50pm. To learn more about Grand Iftar head here.
