If, like me, you grew up obsessed with Hanna-Barbera’s Wacky Races, then this is going to be right up your street! Krazy Races is revving up to bring “the UK’s largest touring soapbox derby event” to Bristol this September. Known for its wild and zany races in towns and cities across the country, this will be a first-of-its-kind event for the city.
Previous Krazy Races have raised more than £150,000 for local causes, with Many Minds and Children’s Hospice South West the two chosen charities for this Bristol race. Taking place in Victoria Park, expect a day full of “fun and thrills, with competitors vying for trophies and local pride.”
Thousands of people are expected to cheer on these motorless soapbox cars, propelled solely on the power of gravity, race down Windmill Hill. So far, more than 30 teams have signed up to the soapbox derby event, but there’s still time to enter your team – with the races not until September 7, 2025.
Sarah Belcher, Founder of Krazy Races, said: “Over the years, we’ve seen some truly creative soapboxes, and we’re excited to see what the people of Bristol come up with. With Bristol’s famous hills, we’re in for a day to remember!”
Teams can be made up of individuals, charity groups, or businesses. You just have to be willing to design, build, and race your own handcrafted soapbox. The event will be run in a knockout competition format, with multiple trophies and prizes on offer. If you just fancy watching, there’ll be plenty of entertainers, food stalls, and more for spectators to enjoy.
