Elvis Presley knew a hit single when he heard one; he also knew a lot about a good sandwich. Alongside the infamous Fool’s Gold Loaf, his favourite was a sweet and salty combination of peanut butter, bananas and crispy bacon – the Elvis. He would wolf down his namesake one after another. And after sampling the version made by Little Bagel Co, we can understand why.
Served on a freshly made, hand rolled rolled bagel – choices include poppy, sesame, everything and plain – it is more than fit for The King. To British taste buds, the combo might appear a little off-putting. But trust us when we say: The man was onto something. You’ll consider ordering a second instantly after finishing the first. We recommend adding the chilli honey for maximum flavour.
Paying homage to bagel culture in New York, Little Bagel Co serves up a range of bagel icons on the Clifton Triangle with an eclectic range of toppings. It opened earlier in the summer and was inspired by Wes Thompson’s various trips to the Big Apple. And after years of practicing his bagel baking talents over lockdown, Wes was ready to go.
Little Bagel Co mainly acts as a takeaway, offering a small selection of homemade cakes and speciality coffee, but there are a few seats lining the cosy interior. And it has become our regular go-to tasty, affordable and quick lunch hotspot.
The showstopper on the menu has to be the NY deli classic Reuben. It mixes pastrami, sauerkraut, russian dressing, dill pickles and emmental – and is packed with flavour. Vegans are catered for too, and can swap out the meat and cheese for roasted broccoli.
Other bagel icons include, salmon lox and cream cheese (with dill, capers and pickled red onion); the BEC (bacon, egg, and cheese); and the Asian-influenced kimchi and cheese. Little Bagel Co also does daily specials that are always worth considering. So don’t make up your mind before you head down.
