Wagyu steak is undoubtedly the best in the world. Hailing from Japan, the cut of beef comes from a small selection of Japanese cows known for their well-marbled fat distribution. The result is a steak where fats melt at a lower temperature, giving an unbeatably buttery, juicy and tender taste. So soft you won’t need a steak knife to cut it up.
It’s something every meat lover should try at least once. But you don’t need a plane ticket to Kobe this Christmas to enjoy the world’s best steak. Head down to Mugshot, the popular 1920s-themed British steakhouse next to St Nicholas Market, to sample some A5 Grade Japanese purebred Wagyu – the highest quality grade for Wagyu beef – for a festive treat.
Mugshot is well-known for its ‘hot stone dining‘, so you can finish cooking your steak at the table. Hot stones are brought to your table at a sizzling 350℃, so you can add in butters and sauces, included with each steak, as you eat. Not only does it make it easier to control the speed at which the steak cooks, but ensures your last bite is as piping hot as the first.
To get your lips around a Wagyu steak that will melt in your mouth like a snowman on a summer’s day, you will have to act quick. Mugshot only has a limited number to order this Christmas, but have two different varieties to sample. Firstly the Japanese fillets at around 10oz, while ribeye lovers should have an eye on the massive 20oz Wagyu steak. Perfect for sharing, if you’re feeling generous this Christmas.
Both unique cuts are served with hand cut triple cooked chips, two butters of choice, a homemade Japanese whisky sauce, and a dram of Japanese whiskey too. Mugshot’s other steaks are equally amazing, with everything from chateaubriand and porterhouse steaks to ribeye and sirloin. You can even order one of Mugshot’s amazing pizzas if you’re not a fan of getting the meat sweats.
Of course, Mugshot wouldn’t be fulfilling the 1920s vibe very well if it didn’t also serve some fantastic, classic cocktails that invoke prohibition-era New York. Nibble on some meaty snacks while you drink too, with pigs in blanket, pork belly bites and BBQ beef short ribs. To learn more head here.
