We believe Bristol is blessed with some of the best burgers in Britain. But we’re not the only ones that think so. One Bristol burger joint has made the shortlist for the National Burger Awards 2023. While another close by to the city has also made the cut.
Squeezed has been selected for their drool-worthy burgers, alongside 15 other finalists, and will be invited down to London to take part in an epic cook-off on February 22. They will fight popular burger joints such as London’s Bleeker, Glasgow’s El Perro Negro and Birmingham’s Flying Cows for this year’s crown. Their Beetlejuice burger, featuring a black garlic and squid ink aioli plus gochujang ketchup, will carry them into the final this year.
The tasty cook-off will consist of three rounds, where finalists will first be required to cook their burgers in front of the judges. Before creating a technical burger made up of a specific selection of ingredients that will be supplied on the day to be named Burger Chef of the Year. While an additional round will also require finalists to produce a meat-free burger. A panel of judges (who we’re well jel of) will every burger, before deciding who to crown champion on the day.
“Fluffy buns, succulent patties and condiments galore – what’s not to love about the beloved burger?” says Genna Ash-Brown, editor of Dine Out Magazine, which runs the event.
“With so many stellar entries flying in for this year’s National Burger Awards, narrowing it down to just 16 finalists really was a painstaking (and hunger inducing!) task. But we got there in the end – and what an exceptional line-up it is, packed with former winners, past competitors and feisty new entrants looking to leave their mark on a revered national stage.”
Squeezed is well-known for its juicy burgers, all served from a converted shipping container in Wapping Wharf. Despite being arguably Bristol’s smallest burger joint, it packs flavour into every bite since starting in 2017. And while it claims to “keep it simple,” is known for explosive burger flavours. Such as the NY Seoul, using a gochujang burger sauce, and The Shell with its Thai green, peanut BBQ sauce.
As former winners of the National Burger Awards, we feel Squeezed are in for a good shot at success this year. But they’ll face tough competition, including from another local burger joint. Fattso from Wells, which until recently held a location in Clifton, has also been nominated for its Royal with Extra Cheese – one for all Pulp Fiction fans out there.
