That homelessness remains such an issue in modern society is a damning indictment. No one should face the possibility of not having a roof over their head. Yet according to the government, over 6,000 households across England were at risk of eviction between January and March last year. This number is 25% higher than before the pandemic and could go even higher as we head into winter.
Since 1998, StreetSmart has run initiatives to support local charities that help homeless people over the Christmas period. Partnering with restaurants nationwide, a voluntary £1 donation is added to every diner’s bill to support local homelessness projects during November and December.
It has raised over £12 million for homeless and vulnerable people in the UK since it began. Working with the property industry charity LandAid, StreetSmart ensures every penny of this has gone to delivering life-changing services for young people across the UK.
This year several Bristol restaurants, such as Secret Bristol favourite’s Lucky Strike, Wilsons and Pizzarova, will participate in this year’s fundraising. They’ll be joined by A.B.O.E, Bertha’s, Bokman, Bosco, Box E, Bulrush, Caper & Cure, Cotto Wine Bar & Kitchen, COR, Harbour House, Harvey Nichols, Little Hollows, Marmo, Pasta Ripiena, Rocksalt, Snobby’s and Sonny Stores.
“It is great to see so many new restaurants joining in with StreetSmart this year,” said Pam Lloyd of PamLloyd PR, who has worked with StreetSmart for over ten years in Bristol. “And we are so grateful to all those restaurants that have supported us for over ten years for being such faithful supporters of such an important charity initiative in our city.”
Last year, a portion of the funds raised went to Caring in Bristol – which focuses on early intervention and prevention of homelessness, alongside emergency temporary accommodation – to transform and reopen the youth night shelter. The remainder of the funds were donated to Help Bristol’s Homeless which provides temporary accommodation for people of all ages. StreetSmart will run from now until the end of December.
