The Glassboat didn’t start life as a social hub. It was actually a working barge in the 1920s (making it roughly 100 years old!), but became one of Bristol’s most beloved dining spots during the ‘80s. Situated on the idyllic Welshback and offering panoramic views of the floating harbour, locals were obviously devastated when it closed last year.
But there is life in the old boat yet! Bristol’s local gin company, 6 O’clock Gin has reopened The Glassboat as the ultimate gin destination in Bristol. Not only will you be able to enjoy G&Ts and 6 O’clock Gin cocktails, but buy a bottle (or two) to take away and more from the onboard retail store. Plus, get hands-on with gin tastings, cocktail masterclasses and gin blending experiences, and enjoy live music evenings and pop-up dining events.
6 O’clock Gin started life nearly 30 years ago on a local fruit farm, where owners Edward and Penny Kain started making fruity liqueurs, including a Sloe Gin recipe. Some years later, their children Michael and Felicity took over the distillery and perfected this gin recipe—6 O’clock Gin was born through this experimentation.
Based in Thornbury, 6 O’clock Gin can be tried all over the world. (You’ll likely recognise it from its distinct Bristol Blue bottles.) But it’s wonderful to learn the artisan spirits brand has not lost touch with its roots. After several years of successful pop-up stores around Bristol, this permanent location for 6 O’clock Gin is beyond exciting.
“We are absolutely thrilled to have acquired The Glassboat. Our vision is to preserve its historic charm while infusing new energy into this treasured site,” said Paul Sullivan, Managing Director of 6 O’clock Gin. “The reopening of The Glassboat signifies a momentous occasion for us as it allows us to introduce 6 O’clock Gin to the heart of the city. We invite guests to join us, not only to savour our gins but also to learn more about the art of gin making. Most importantly, we want everyone to have a wonderful time in this unique space.”
The grand reopening marks the first phase of development for The Glassboat. In the next phase, The Glassboat will unveil a fully functional kitchen, as well as a dedicated meeting space below deck which will be available for private hire, events and gatherings. Furthermore, next week sees the return of 6 O’clock Gin’s pop-up shops at Cabot Circus and Cribbs Causeway, just in time for the festive season.
