Sandwich Sandwich, so good they named it twice, has been crowned UberEats’ Restaurant of the Year. The award, which narrowed the competition down to just nine finalists back in September, is committed to recognising independent businesses across the UK and Ireland. With the £100,000 prize going to the Bristol-based business last Thursday (October 5).
Since starting in 2012, Sandwich Sandwich has become known for serving mammoth sandwiches, with equally appealing cross-sections. There are now five locations across Bristol, meaning you’re never far from one of these must-try lunchtime hotspots in the city. One bite of these sandwiches and every supermarket sarnie will taste like cardboard in comparison.
It serves every possible filling and combination you desire with the choice of devouring it between slices of either white, granary or caraway bread. Choose from the likes of overnight roasted rare topside of beef with red onion jam, horseradish mayo and Stilton; or sliced roast chicken, avocado, smoked back bacon with a lemon and tarragon mayonnaise. That’s before we even talk about the snacks like Scotch eggs, veggie sausage rolls, sweet pastries and indulgent desserts!
“It is difficult to put into words how much being announced as the winner of the Uber Eats Restaurant of the Year Awards means to us,” said owner Josh Kleiner, owner of Sandwich Sandwich.
“The process has been so exciting from start to finish and it has been incredible to take part alongside the other finalists. Big shout out to our restaurant team back home in Bristol, our family and of course Uber Eats for the support in getting us to this moment. This investment will make our ambitions to grow as a family business a reality.”
This year, the judging panel was made up of content creator Seema Pankhania, MasterChef: The Professionals judge Monica Galetti and Lorraine Copes, founder and CEO at Be Inclusive Hospitality.
Another judge was cook and TV presenter Prue Leith, who said: “That from Sandwich Sandwich was particularly imaginative, inventive and delicious. I’m delighted to hear of their ambition to open additional restaurants. Their menu is fresh, full of flavour, healthy and extremely varied. There’s something for everyone on there.”
Two months ago, Bristol went mad for Sandwich Sandwich’s crazy creations of “frozen cheesecake brownie sandwiches”. Handing out thousands for free in under 15 minutes, it created one of the longest queues the city has ever seen. So what next for Sandwich Sandwich? Well, the team has hinted about plans to expand outside of Bristol. Keep your eyes peeled!
