When we heard the news that the Bristol Balloon Fiesta would be slightly shorter this year, we were worried our summer skies would be slightly less exciting in 2024. Not to worry, however, as another major ballooning event is stepping up to bring an extra pop (hopefully not literally) colour to Bristol. The National Hot Air Balloon Championships arrive in the city for the first time this August.
“We are thrilled to reveal that this year’s Fiesta will also play host to the British National Hot Air Balloon Championships!” said Bristol International Balloon Fiesta. “The Nationals will see approximately 15 teams of balloonists take flight over Bristol and the surrounding areas to complete a series of set challenges, such as dropping virtual and physical markers in set areas to earn points.”
This year, the Bristol Balloon Fiesta will last only three days at Ashton Court (August 9 – 11), while citywide celebrations will see smaller fleets of hot air balloons pop up all over the city for Fiesta Week (August 5 – 8). You can also expect the return of the legendary Night Glow events, as well as the mass ascents of 100 hot air balloons (weather permitting) from the free festival.
When can I see the National Hot Air Balloon Championships?
The National Hot Air Balloon Championships will run throughout this – from August 6 to 11 – with the balloons launching from across the region and then competing over Ashton Court during the Fiesta weekend. Unlike the big and silly balloons we’re used to seeing over Bristol, competition balloons are smaller, slimmer and more agile. Better for performing incredible tricks that we’re excited to see.
Just some of the competition challenges will involve performing doughnuts in the air, balloons flying low into the site, and making quick 180-degree turns. It’s not just for our entertainment either. The winner of the Nationals will go on to fly the British Team that will compete in the European Hot Air Balloon Championships next year.
Approximately 15 teams will compete, twice daily, across the city and wider region. Flying will happen either in the morning and/or evening – starting with a PM flight on Tuesday and ending with an AM flight on Sunday – as this is when the wind conditions are best for flying hot air balloons. Over the Fiesta weekend, this is scheduled for 7am at Ashton Court each day. You can learn more about the Fiesta here.
