There are a lot of bridges in Bristol, but none are as iconic as Clifton Suspension Bridge. But after 160 years, it’s starting to look a little shabby, don’t you think? Don’t judge, we’re not the only ones who think so either!
Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust has announced it’s working closely with the team behind Upfest, Europe’s largest street art festival, to add a little colour to the worn-out bridge. Bringing two Bristol icons – Brunel and street art – together in a way never seen before.
Taking inspiration from the city itself, the graffiti-style makeover will incorporate iconic elements of the city. Over 100 artists are expected to be involved, painting the bridge images ranging from hot air balloons to drum ‘n’ bass raves, and stoners to Shaun the Sheep.
This is part of the new-look Upfest, with work beginning shortly after Upfest Presents… this summer, with the multimillion-pound paint job expected to take a total of eight weeks. The Grade I-listed structure will be completely closed during this period but will reopen with a Mardi Gras-style parade and party.
It’s not the only update Clifton Suspension Bridge is receiving either. A “cutting edge, environmentally friendly and sustainable” new lighting rig will replace the old one – complete with strobe lighting so that huge parties can be held on the bridge in the future. “It’s either this or we raise the prices of bridge tolls,” said a spokesperson for the Trust.
This is not the first time Clifton Suspension Bridge has undergone paintworks. In 2001, it was actually painted blue but this had to be removed quickly as seagulls kept crashing into the bridge and falling onto the traffic below.
April Fools! Sorry if we got you for a moment there…
