Many of us have turned to sharpening our cooking skills whilst in lockdown. And many of us are finding that doing so without the guiding hand of an expert is pretty daunting. Happily, with this virtual cooking event you’ll get kitchen advice from one of London’s most gifted chefs. Robin Gill has delighted London foodies for years with inventive, brilliant cooking at The Dairy, Sorella, and recent opening Darby’s, and on December 17 – with a little help from the Guinness team – he’ll be teaching you to create an Irish classic.
The Virtual Cookalong with Guinness and Robin Gill on Thursday December 17, promises to be a delicious evening in, so make sure you book your tickets in advance to avoid missing out. But don’t worry if you don’t manage to get your hands on tickets this time round as there will be another cookalong in January (date tbc). It’ll be a great way to beat those January blues!
Gill draws on his Irish upbringing to craft small plates at NYC-inspired oyster bar Darby’s, which makes him the ideal person to bring a Guinness-inspired recipe to life. With the winter nights drawing in and the temperature dropping, the season calls immediately for comfort food – and this recipe ticks all the boxes. Gill will be teaching guests to create Irish rarebit, made with Guinness-infused cheddar and baked under the grill until it’s golden brown and bubbling.
However, before you come close to tucking into gloriously gooey molten cheese, you’ll first be learning how to bake your own soda bread. An Irish staple that’s quick and easy to make, Gill will be giving it a Guinness twist to add richness and depth to the dish. No need to panic though, because all the ingredients will be delivered to your door in a handy delivery box. With the kit containing everything needed to bake soda bread, and Gill on hand to guide even novice bakers through the recipe steps, you’re only a short cook away from tucking into a homely yet indulgent meal.
Your delivery box also comes equipped with two cans of Guinness, to flavour both the bread and cheese, but there’s another exciting addition that’s going to take this cookalong to the next level. Whilst your rarebit is toasting away under the grill, you’ll be taught how to whip up your new favourite cocktail: a Guinness Old Fashioned. Taking the classic cocktail and punching it up with a Guinness reduction and brown sugar syrup, you’ll find the bold flavours of Guinness send the traditional whiskey cocktail soaring to new heights.
It’s the perfect accompaniment for your Irish rarebit, and will round off your virtual cook-along nicely. We think delicious, comforting food – made with feeling and bags of flavour – is the best solution to a chilly winter’s night, and after an invigorating cook with Robin Gill and Guinness, we’re sure you’ll agree!
