This is not the first time Bristol Bears players have found themselves moving south of Bristol. The local rugby team used to play at the Memorial Stadium near Gloucester Road until moving to Ashton Gate. But running a successful cafe, like Burra, is a very different sport from throwing an egg-shaped ball around some grass.
Luke Morahan and Jake Heenan, both still currently playing for Bristol Bears, opened Burra on Lower Redland Road in 2021, and a second site on Gloucester Road last year. Nominated as ‘Café of the Year’ in the Bristol Life Awards in 2022, Burra cafes are described as “Antipodean-themed” (essentially Australia and New Zealand-themed, where Luke and Jake are from respectively).
The main aim of these cafés is to be “healthy, natural, sophisticated, simple and sustainable.” Sourcing everything from within 25 miles of the city, Burra promotes an ethical lifestyle – with a menu boasting everything from egg dishes to rice bowls, fritters and brekkie ‘buns’. For something sweet, it has to be the banana bread, while all coffee comes from a roastery in St Werburghs, Extract Coffee.
But while Burra has built quite the following on Gloucester Road, unfortunately for those fans, the cafe is relocating south of the river very soon. Speaking on Instagram, Burra said: “In an exciting fresh chapter for Burra, we will be relocating our Gloucester Road site to a new venue in BS3 in early November. Southville is an amazing hub of independent food and drink and we cannot wait to be part of this beautiful community.
Opening on North Street, in what used to be Farahway, Burra is moving to Southville on November 12. And to celebrate the launch, it will give away the first 200 coffees free this Sunday. So join Burra from 9 a.m. to get your hands on a hot beverage on a first come, first served basis.
There are already a few excellent cafes down in the area, like Sweven and NOOK on North Street, or Lucky Strike on East Street, to name a few. So Burra should expect some tough competition, but we think they’ve got the muscle to be on for a win. To learn more head here.
